Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), or Eleuthero, is a small woody shrub with a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine. It can be found growing in mixed and coniferous mountain forests of East Asia, China, Japan, and Russia. Eleuthero has been used as a tonic and immune- enhancing herb for thousands of years in China and Russia. It is known for its adaptogenic effects, which strengthen the body and increase general resistance to daily stress by balancing the adrenal glands in an idiosyncratic way: if the adrenals were depleted, this herbal preparation increased the adrenal functions, whereas if the adrenals were overstimulated, the herb seemed to slow them down.
In Lyme Disease, any plants with adaptogenic properties can aid in treatment. Siberian Ginseng, on top of its beneficial effect on the immune system, is a perfect treatment tool due to its ability to combat many of the cognitive symptoms of Lyme Disease – “mental fog,” inability to focus, insomnia, and generalized anxiety. In addition, extracts have shown to combat fatigue, improve learning and memory, and stimulate the immune system.
